Chennai, India
Southern India is very different from Northern India, so the few days spent in Chennai allow students the time to adjust to the new region and culture. The final three field visit to the urban segments of poverty take place in Chennai.
The first field visit is to migrant workers, people who have moved from their villages to the city to find work. There are some interesting discussions about international migrant labor to the middle east as well. In this village there is the opportunity to visit local temples.
The second field visit is to the slum community where families live in small homes or apartments. There is a government sponsored pre-school they visit and then they talk with the families living in the homes built on the edge of the river.
The third visit is to a mainstream poor family. These families have managed to pool their resources to afford many of the commodities of middle-class life and live in homes or apartments in the city.
In Chennai the students also take a tour of British India to learn about the period of colonization. In 2017 the students visited the financial technology startup, Intellect Design. They also share a traditional Indian meal in the home of the program director, Mahesh.
