Developing Village: 3rd Segment of Poverty
As the urban migration cycle continues, families move from more rural villages to communities called developing villages - villages located just outside of urban centers. Their proximity to the city allows the communities to gain a higher salary by sending at least one relative into the city to work while at the same time maintaining the low cost of living in the village.
Field Visits - Summers of 2015, 2016, and 2017
In 2015, 2016, and 2017 students visited Barara, a developing village about a 45-minute drive outside of Agra. Barara has a central health center for five villages, a women’s self-help group to collectively raise funds for buying water, buffalo to sell milk, and a community member that purchased a water filter to sell affordable filtered water to the village. Barara has always been a favorite stop for the students.
