Packaging
2016
A revolutionary innovation in packaging in India was the introduction of sachets - single use plastic packets of shampoo, detergent, and other products that are sold for a couple rupees (less than $0.05 USD). These packets capture the consumers at the bottom of the economic pyramid who do not have the cash on hand to buy larger quantities at one time. Although this innovation reaches a previously unserved portion of the population, the disposable sachets have become a large source of pollution in cities today. In 2016, a student team decided to try reforming the sachet shampoo business model to reduce packaging waste.
They interviewed distributors, visited retail stores and corner shops, and spoke with sachet consumers about their price points and average consumption. They decided to focus on creating refillable shampoo bottle at the price of a sachet. They hoped to reduce the environmental footprint while maintaining a low price. They planned to utilize refillable plastic bags instead of bottles to reduce cost and waste. |
