Employment
2015
India currently faces a huge challenge: How can it keep its 1.3 billion people employed? There is a program by the government to guarantee 100 days of work to all citizens, but creating jobs for them to do can be a challenge. A large portion of the workforce is also unskilled. Groups of men wait by the side of the road for employers to pass by and pick up workers for the day for basic construction tasks.
Through visits to many worksites and villages, students decided to focus on the issue of connecting employers with employees. They decided to create a job matching service for unskilled labor, leveraging the prevalence of technology and cell phone use at all levels of the economic pyramid. When a company needed workers, they enter the job details onto their website. The student team’s network would then send a text notification to job seekers near the area of the job, with the chance to send a simple text back to reply whether or not they plan to show up for the job. Then, after the job had been progressing for a while, the employees and the employer could provide feedback by answering some simple questions about each other. |
